Champion filly Midday claims the Middleton Stakes at York – Horse Racing Update
Champion filly Midday claimed the Toresport.com Middleton Stakes on Thursday, May 12 at the York race-course.
This Group 2 event was contended by fillies and mares of age four and above and was run over a distance of one mile and two and a half furlongs.
It has been reported that the champion filly Midday had to knuckle down to hold off the pace setter of the race, the champion filly Sajjhaa. Midday is one of the most celebrated fillies at the moment. She trains under the care of the talented trainer Henry
Cecil and was ridden by the ever famous jockey Tom Queally in this race.
She was sent out to contend the Middleton Stakes at odds of 11-10. She was successful in holding off the rest of the field by a distance of two lengths. The second place finisher was filly Sajjha who was the 7-1 favourite for this race. Another trainee of
Henry Cecil, Timepiece was the third place and finished four lengths behind the runner up. Timepiece was backed with odds of 6-1.
It was not an easy victory for Midday, as she was seen to struggle for the lead throughout the race and was particularly facing a great deal of constant competition from the ante-post favourite Sajjha. She was running under the famed jockey Frankie Dettori,
who managed to stay in the battle until the end of the race.
Midday made a very smart move when she was challenged by Sajjhaa, as she did not immediately increase her speed. Then, as the race progressed and she was in better control of her jockey, she wore down Sajjhaa quite impressively.
The winning jockey was very pleased with the performance of his mount. In a post-race interview, he was reported as saying, “She was a little bit ring-rusty today and looks like she will be hard to pass again. I was impressed with her.”
In the 2010 edition of this race, the winner Midday was beaten by the filly Sariska and thus it was a big day for Cecil and the five year old winning filly.
