Champion trainer Doug Watson’s gratitude on the first victory and plans for the course of the Dubai World Cup Carnival 2012
The previous edition of the Dubai World Cup Carnival was really uneventful for trainer Doug Watson, who could not credit any wins against his name. However, this time around the situation is different as his eight-year-old Barbecue Eddie got him the
Etisalat My Plan (Handicap) on 12th January at the Meydan racecourse.
The fact that the gelding of Stormy Atlantic, out of The Green Owl, could put the entries of trainers like Mahmood Al Zarooni, De Kock and Luca Cumani at bay, added all the more thrill and excitement to the victory.
His aspiration of successes from the Carnival does not end here as the three-time UAE Champion trainer, Doug Watson has more plans to pursue.
He wants to yield the most out of the international platform that the Meydan has turned into now.
The opening week of the Carnival was woeful for Doug Watson, but he did not lose his calm and got the reward for it pretty soon.

According to him, majority of the trainers prepare for this iconic event on the racing calendar a year ahead. Either there are horses that they do not race for a year so that they turn out to be in their best form by the time the Carnival falls, or,
on the other hand, some even go to an extent of training altogether new horses for this prestigious event.
Barbecue Eddie himself is a classic example of a horse that was brought in from Europe and took his time to get accustomed to the racing trends around these tracks and could finally throw in a victory.
His trainer went on explaining:
“A few years back when we first got him we tried to run him, it didn't work out, so we gave him the summer off, but he's come around nicely”.
His other entry, Kandar Du Falgas, who could not win and was left for the runner up’s position by a heads’ margin did not turn out to be a sheer disappointment for Doug Watson, as the horse’s performance throughout the race was not exactly unsatisfactory.

Also keeping in mind that Kandar Du Falgas is a ten-year-old without any serious concerns and issues is a miracle in itself.
He is being considered for the Dubai World Cup night. Doug Watson’s Silver Pond will be taking on the Dubai World Cup or the Sheema Classic, while Albaasil is being pointed towards the Grade 1 Dubai Duty Free.
