Champions Inter To Go Downhill With Rafa Benitez
Rafa Benitez has only been incharge of Inter Milan for a short period of time. However the manager has already gotten off to a disastrous start with the team. The Champions of Europe Inter Milan were recently scheduled to play the UEFA Super Cup against the Europa League winners, Athletico Madid. Most people expected Inter to come up on top at the end of the day, however that was not the case as Athletico went on to beat Inter. What this proved what the fact that Inter were already starting to live up to their previous season.
The reason for Inter performing in such a way can be summed up by just one face. Rafa Benitez, is now the new man sitting on the sidelines at the San Siro as compared to Jose Mourinho. The difference between the two managers couldn’t be a greater one.
In simple words, Mourinho is a proven winner, who knows how to a build a team that is destined to win titles. That is exactly what Mourinho did with Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan and it is something that Inter Milan would be wishing that Rafa Benitez could also do.
Benitez on the other hand has not been half as successful as Mourinho. In the six years he spent at Anfield as Liverpool’s manager, he failed to build a team that could win a single premier league trophy. Liverpool were a team that had won the title eighteen times in the past, the fact that Benitez couldn’t help them repeat their prior success means, that there is something wrong with the manager.
Benitez did manage to win a Champions League with Liverpool, however that was probably due to freakish luck in the teams final match and some terrific performances by the team as compared to the manager making any fantastic decisions.
What Benitez did manage to show the world in his time at Liverpool, was how the manager lacked the ability to build a team or retain players who were proven to be winners. The manager wasted huge amounts of cash on players such as Lucas Leiva and Andriy Voronin and ended up selling players like Xabi Alonso.
Another major reason for Benitez failing in Italy would be because as compared to the other leagues in the world, the Italian Serie A is a much more tactical affair. It isn’t having the right players in Italy but the right mentality and mind set to going about the matches, that makes the difference. This is an area where Rafa Benitez is lacking, the manager has very little or no tactical knowledge about what he does and tends to rely solely on his star players winning the matches for him.
This season, teams like Juventus and Ac Milan have greatly strengthened their teams. Even though Inter have a fairly strong team like the one they did last season, this season might not manage to live up to last season’s hype. Inter Milan and their fans should be considering that it is highly unlikely that the team would be lifting three trophies again this season, so they should be looking forward to either two trophies or maybe even one, as long as the manager doesn’t pull another special and get the team to finish outside the top four.
