Champions League: Cool Chelsea stroll to win over Marseille
Chelsea 2 Marseille 0
Chelsea eased to a Champions League victory over a spirited Marseille despite never getting into top gear at Stamford Bridge.
Captain John Terry flicked in a Gael Kakuta corner to give his side an early lead, before Nicolas Anelka doubled the advantage with a coolly taken penalty – awarded for Stephane Mbia’s handball – shortly before the half hour mark.
The Blues never sparkled in the second period, but did still hit the woodwork twice through Alex’s thunderous free kick and Michael Essien’s late effort.
The French champions worked hard but lacked quality in forward areas, as Brandao and Lucho Gonzalez both saw efforts go close.
The win sees Chelsea stay joint-top of Group F with Spartak Moscow, and the Blues head to Russia next.
