Champions League: Spurs pegged back in Bremen
Werder Bremen 2 Tottenham 2
German side Werder Bremen battled back from two goals down to ensure that Tottenham had to settle for a point on their Champions League debut.
Spurs flew into a two goal lead inside 20 minutes in Bremen, as first Gareth Bale’s cross was turned into his own net by Werder defender Petri Pasanen under pressure from Peter Crouch, before Crouch thumped in a glorious header from Rafael van der Vaart’s cross to double an ecstatic Tottenham’s lead.
However, an attacking Werder outfit would hit back either side of half time, with Hugo Almeida heading in a Wesley cross shortly before the break, before tricky winger Marko Marin curled on effort into the bottom corner shortly after the break.
Both sides had chances to win it in what was an entertaining clash, with Crouch just denied by the outstretched fingers of goalkeeper Tim Wiese at the death.
The other match in Group A, holders Inter Milan’s trip to FC Twente, also ended in a 2-2 draw.
