Champions League T20: Victoria defeat Wayamba by 8 wickets in a must win match
Wayamba’s eight-wicket defeat against the Victoria Bushrangers kicked them out of the Airtel Champions League T20 being played in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757. A purposeful bowling and top-quality fielding display was well complimented by a promising batting performance as the Victorians sealed an 8 wicket victory at SuperSport Park, Centurion on Monday, the 20th of September.
The Centurion fixture was a must-win match for both sides to keep their hopes of making it to the semi-finals. However, the Victorians outplayed the opposition and Wayamba paid the price for scoring five ducks with plenty of overs to spare.
The defeat could have been even more humiliating had Wayamba’s listless innings did not have a nervy fifty from Mahela Jayawardene and a cameo of 33-ball 44 from Jehan Mubarak. Both Jayawardene and Mubarak contributed 95 runs to Wayamba’s meagre total of 106 in which 6 extras scored the second highest runs.
The Victoria Bushrangers showed a comprehensive performance with remarkable bowling statistics, athletic show in the field and confident batting.
Wayamba Captain Jehan Mubarak, after winning the toss, opted to bat first. Wayamba’s line-up failed to face the bowling armoury of the Victorians and kept on loosing wickets at regular intervals. Only Mahela Jayawardene and skipper Jehan Mubarak resisted against the opposition attack while the rest of the cast floundered against Peter Siddle who scythed through their line-up and finished with 4 for 24 from four overs. Siddle’s four-wicket haul was well complimented by James Pattinson and Andrew McDonald, both sharing two scalps each.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Pattinson-c1653’s vicious Yorker sacked Jeevantha Kulatunga for his second successive duck in the tournament. Mahela Udawatte, who had missed the previous game, started with a confident drive to mid-off that would definitely have eased the nerves of Wayamba in normal circumstances. Clint McKay, standing well inside the circle at mid-off, stopped the shot with a full length dive to his right. Udawatte, after being disappointed at this denial of a boundary, tried to compensate it with a run between the wickets but McKay’s through at the striker’s end hit the stumps, sending him back to the pavilion for a duck.
Udawatte’s dismissal brought captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-McDonald-c1042 broke the partnership, having Mubarak caught by Hussey. A brief period of sublime stroke play from Jehan Mubarak earned the side 44 more runs from just 30 deliveries, hitting five boundaries and two lofty sixes.
Wicketkeeper Janith Perera and Jayawardene added nine more runs to the scorecard before the former mistimed Pattinson to Hussey. Perera was soon followed back by Karunanayake, Thissara Perera and Isuzu Udana as the side faltered to 95 for 7. All the three batsmen failed to open their account.
Opener Mahela Jayawardene scripted a half-century off 40 balls but failed to capitalize and left the crease moments after completing it. Wayamba was bundled out in the 17th over for a meagre total of 106.
David Hussey and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Aaron-Finch-c881 led the Aussie side to the target quite comfortably to seal an easy win. Despite an eight-wicket victory against Wayamba, Victoria’s prospects of making it to the semi-finals are hinged on Chennai Supper King’s match against the Warriors at Port Elizabeth. A heavy defeat or a comprehensive victory for the King’s will allow the Victorians to play the semi-final of the second edition of Champions League T20.
