Champions League: Tottenham Hotspur v Young Boys half time report
Tottenham Hotspur 2 Young Boys 0 (agg: 4-3)
Tottenham Hotspur have one foot in the group stages of the Champions League after a dream first half against Young Boys in their qualifier at White Hart Lane.
Spurs’ blistering start stunned their Swiss opponents, and there were just five minutes on the clock when Gareth Bale’s cross to the far post was headed in by an unmarked Peter Crouch.
Jermain Defoe later doubled his side’s advantage, albeit controversially, as he appeared to have handled the ball before firing a left footed effort that went in off the post.
Defoe should have extended Tottenham’s lead shortly after, but could only fire wide when played in by Aaron Lennon, and although Young Boys improved as the half went on – with Henri Bienvenu heading over from close range – Spurs boss Harry Redknapp must be confident of progressing from here.
