Champions League: Tottenham Hotspurs versus Twente Enschede FC 4-1 Analysis and Future Predictions (Part 4)
In the 69th minute Twente made a substitution as Luuk de Jong replaced Denny Landzaat. Two minutes later they carried an assault with Nacer Chadli helping Wout Bramain scoring but he lost the ball when he launched it
to the moon.
10 minutes later came some more action as Nacer Chadli was the orchestrator again but this time as he took it upon himself to score but failed miserably.
In the 82nd minute Aaron Lennon was brought on in the place of Luka Modric. Modric had indeed completed his job splendidly and therefore Lennon was given a chance to make his way back in to the first team.
Benoit Assou-Ekotto won a free kick in the 85th minute and Gareth Bale took full advantage of it as the expert from the left took full control by scoring another goal making it 4-1. 3 minutes later Twente came up with
a weak response as Roberto Rosales assisted Luuk de Jong but he missed the close range shot.
In the 89th minute Robbie Keane was brought on for Roman Pavlyuchenko. The crowd cheered their hero off the field as he had played a major role in the victory for Spurs.
In the end Twente made their two last attempts to score a goal when the frustrated Luuk de Jong kicked the ball into the stands. That was followed by another attempt but this time it was Peter Wisgerhof who controlled the ball
and passed it and Bryan Ruiz accepted it. He shot from outside the box to the bottom right corner but his attempt was saved.
The match ended with the whistle of the referee and Tom Huddlestone taking a free kick in the Spurs half.
In the end Spurs had total domination of the plays the wanted to make. Though the possession of the ball was shared at 50% each, the match clearly showed that it is important what you do with the ball at you feet and not when you
possess it all the time.
Also the total attempts made by the Twente side were far more than Spurs had, in fact they were 11 more. Spurs took 16 shots at goal from which 9 were on target. On the other hand Twente took a stunning 27 shots in desperation
and as a result only 6 of them were on target.
Though their midfield has typically superb chemistry, the team over all did need to improve their finishing ability and perhaps sign a better striker.
The fouls committed from Twente were also far more than the Spurs. While Spurs committed to just 13 fouls, Twente managed 25. This was expected as Twente was down on goal difference and they were frustrated by the plays made by
Tottenham.
There were corner taken by Twente too. Spurs had just but Twente had 7 on which they could score. Though their crossing ability was admirable but the team here again lacked a finisher.
Spurs offensive strategy was great and it did seem that their manager Harry Redknapp had prepared them well for the match. This was shown also as the team committed to zero offsides. Twente on the other hand had 3.
There were 2 yellow cards given to Spurs and those were on the same person Rafael Van der Vaart and because of that he was eventually sent off the pitch. Twente on the other hand had 3 yellow cards. The fact that Spurs were still
able to make plays and score goals even if they were a man down was far down right impressive. Also both the team’s goal keepers made the same number of saves, 5.
This result suggests that in the end Spurs have impressed with their play making ability and that certainly emits the idea that their match against their Group-mates and Champions League’s defending Champions, Inter Milan will
be very interesting.
