Champions League: Tottenham score four at White Hart Lane
Tottenham Hotspur recorded a 4-1 victory over Dutch champions FC Twente at White Hart lane.
Two goals from Roman Pavlyuchenko from the penalty spot as well as goals from Rafael van der Vaart and Gareth Bale gave manager Harry Rednkapp’s men all three points in a very entertaining match.
Van der Vaart was at the centre for most of what happened in the match, as he missed a penalty, scored the opening goal and got sent off.
Tottenham went in front through Van der Vaart after the Dutchman got onto the end of Peter Crouch’s knockdown two minutes into the second half. Having missed a penalty in the first half, Van der Vaart stepped away from the second penalty that was softly awarded to Tottenham. Pavlyuchenko comfortably tucked the penalty away as the rain swept through the north London skies.
Twente pulled a goal back thanks to Nacer Chadli, but that was to count for nothing, as Tottenham were awarded their third penalty of the evening. It was another soft decision from the officials, but Pavlyuchenko didn’t care about that as he coolly put the spot-kick away to virtually seal the three points, even with 10-men after Van der Vaart’s dismissal for collecting a second yellow card.
Bale added a fourth goal four minutes from time, storming into the penalty area and finishing with a low shot.
Tottenham are now level with current Champions League holders Inter Milan on four points, and now have back-to-back games with the Italian side.
