Champions League round up 07/12/2010
Tottenham Hotspur marked a remarkable end to their first Champions League campaign as they secured the top spot in Group A after playing a thrilling 3-3 draw against FC Twente while Inter Milan will go through as
runners up from the same group as the Nerrazuris were defeated by Werder Bremen 3-0 last night.
Manchester United also will go into the draw for the next round as seeds after they came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Valencia at the Theatre of Dreams and missed out on a piece of history as they could have
become the only side in the history of the competition to go through the group stages without conceding a goal.
In the same group, the Rangers played a 1-1 draw with Turkish minnows Bursaspor and will now play in the Europa League after finishing third in the group.
The Spurs only needed to match Inter’s result on the night to make sure of their qualification as group winners and were gifted an early lead in the 12th minute when Wisgerhof’s tame back-pass went straight
into the net after Sander Boschker failed to kick the ball clear.
But Twente equalised soon after as Denny Landzaat scored from the penalty spot after a Assou-Ekkotto handball in the box.
Jermaine Defoe scored two more for the Spurs but only to be pegged by goals from Nacer Chadli and Rosales to earn Twenete an honourable draw from the match. Twente now head into the Europa league on the basis of
their third place finish in the group.
In the same group Inter Milan failed to take advantage of the Spurs draw as they lost in Germany 3-0 to Werder Bremen.
Hugo Almeida, Sebastian Prodl and Claudio Pizzaro scored the goals for the Germans on the night.
Over in group C, Manchester United’s defense was finally breached in the competition for the first time as Michael Carrick gave the ball away to Alejandro Dominguez to pass on to Pablo Hernandez, who made no mistake
in beating Ben Amos from inside the box.
But United made sure they got back into the game midway through the second half when Anderson tapped in a feeble clearance by Guaita from a Park free kick.
In the same group, the Rangers played out a 1-1 draw with Bursaspor, Kenny Miller giving the Rangers an early lead in the game but their hopes of victory were dashed late in the second half when Secran Yildrim equalized
for the Turks.
In group B, Schalke retained the top spot in the group by beating Benfica 2-1 in Portugal. Manuel Jurado gave the visitors a lead in the 19th minute of the game and 9 minutes from time. Benedikt Howedes
made it 2-0 to make sure Schalke were not giving up the top spot, Luisao’s goal late in the game only could mean a consolation for the hosts.
In the same group Lyon finished runners up courtesy a 2-2 draw with Hapoel Tel Aviv.
Lisandro Lopez and Alexandre Lacazette got the goals for the French side on the night while Ben Sahar and Eran Zahavi scored for the Israelis.
Over in group D, Barcelona maintained their position as the group leaders as the defeated Rubin Kazan 2-0 with goals from Victor Vazquez and Andreu Fontas.
