Champions Night Maiden Stayers ready for final next Wednesday
The Champions Night Maiden Stayers heats were held last night at Romford. The three heats, each over 575 metres, set up the £1,000 final on 8 September back at Romford.
The first heat saw 6-4 race favourite, Macka Packa, interfere with another greyhound leading to a disqualification. Packa seemed to have the race well in hand after taking the early lead away from Elusive Sam, but Packa took exception to Sam’s attempts to regain the lead, and focused his attention on Sam rather than the race. Packa was ultimately disqualified for ‘deliberate interference’.
Taking full advantage of the situation unfolding in front of him, Lasse Viren slipped past the two leaders, and took first place by 1¼ lengths over unfortunate Sam, who has still qualified for the Maiden Stayers final next week. Macka Packa crossed the finished line in third, a shoulder behind Sam, although with the disqualification it’s a moot point.
Droopys Miley, Farloe Tico, and Bodell Meercat finished in the bottom three, and were eliminated from the final.
In the second heat 4-5 race favourite, Droopys Master, got off to a good start, but trailed Odell Knight who got off to a great start. Knight was clearly out in front after the first bend, and managed to hold it until the sixth bend when Master made his move taking the lead, and the race by a length.
Laurens Lilly, who also got off to a good start, kept up with the leaders but wasn’t able to get in front as she finished in third place just a 1/3 length behind Knight. Other hounds to be eliminated were, Huckles Hatrick, Rockburst Eva, and Masterblaster.
The third and final heat was won by Droopys Elbow who beat 11-8 race favourite Razldazl Zamba by a shoulder. Zamba was slow from the traps, and trailed after the first bend behind Droopys Elbow and Masterclass.
Masterclass got a great start from the traps while all the other hounds lagged behind; however, he was outclassed in this race, and showed that maybe the longer distance races are not his forte. Coming into the sixth bend, Masterclass was not only unable to stop Droopys Elbow from taking the lead and winning the race, but he was also unable to prevent Razldazl Zamba and Streemanagement from passing him.
Stressmanagement and Masterclass ended up in third and fourth respectively. Jodu Fame and Mahongany Bolt were also eliminated from the final.
The final draw is: 1 Razldazl Zamba, 2 Droopys Master, 3 Elusive Sam, 4 Droopys Elbow, 5 Lasse Viren (m), 6 Odell Knight (m).
