Champions Night Standard heats see race favourites falter
The Champions Night Standard final was set last night at Romford in three heats. The top two finishers of each heat earned spots in next week’s £1,000 final.
In heat one, Tearaway John tore away from the pack as he hugged the rails from the traps, and kept up an early lead to the finish line. The race between Droopys Cruyff and Stans Printer for second spot was the match up to watch in this one. Printer was slower from trap six than Cruyff was from trap four, and stayed wide as he tried to move up into the second, and a spot in the final, but Cruyff stayed tough in the middle and finished a head in front of Printer.
Little Sensation, the 7-4 race favourite, continually lost ground after a slow start and finished last place. Bim Bam Boozle, and Tyrur Kerril were also eliminated, finishing in the fourth and fifth spots respectively.
Trainer, Paul Garland, had two entrants in the second heat, 6-4 race favourite, Kish Pirate, and 6-1, Kish Corsair, but it was not the Kish in first that he expected. The race favourite was slow from trap one, and baulked on the first bend, finishing in fourth place while Corsair took first, and claimed unexpected spot in the final, by 2 ¾ lengths over Fire For Effect. Millwards Siren took third spot, but was never in danger of threatening for the lead. Tredgolds Ricky finished in fifth place, and Glanard Bay in sixth.
The third heat saw the third race favourite of three eliminated from the final. Altmore Panther, at 2-1, wasn’t able to make up the 1 length between him and second place finisher, Deanridge Zeus. Mays Rocknroller had a good jump from trap two and took the lead early, and although he lost some ground on the first bend he never lost the lead, and finished 3 ¾ lengths ahead of Zeus.
Eye Onthe Brave was replaced by Aero Vegas in the sixth trap, but the 10-1 longshot couldn’t do much as he finished last. Courtenay Ranger took fourth while another expected finalist, Baltylum Houdini, took fifth.
Considering the favourites have all been eliminated, the final next week could be a good race for punters to try their luck with some longer odds.
Here is next week’s Champions Night Standard final draw: 1 Mays Rocknroller, 2 Tearaway John, 3 Deanridge Zeus, 4 Droopys Cruyff (m), 5 Kish Corsair (m), 6 Fire For Effect (w).
