Championship preview

Can it get any better for Queens Park Rangers at the moment?

Top of the table in the Championship, unbeaten, and scoring more than two goals in every game so far this season, Neil Warnock’s men will be full of confidence when they board their coach heading to Leicester City this weekend.

Leicester came from a goal down to beat Cardiff City on Tuesday to deny the Welsh side the chance to go joint-top with QPR, and the Foxes now have the daunting task of trying to tame QPR. Cardiff will no doubt be looking to bounce back from that defeat and are surely hoping Leicester can repeat the trick twice and beat QPR.

Doncaster play tonight against Leeds United, who suffered a crushing 5-2 defeat to Barnsley on Tuesday. Doncaster have the chance to move up to second if they win, but only for a short time, and after James Coppinger fired in a hat-trick in the 3-1 victory over Norwich, Leeds will have to be on their game.

Millwall occupy third place in the table, and they host Watford, with both teams only losing once this season. Millwall were frustrated on Tuesday night by an inspired Adam Federici in the Reading goal and could only manage a point in the 0-0 draw. As for Reading, they travel to Gordon Strachan’s Middlesbrough, who had to wait until the fourth minute of stoppage time to beat Burnley thanks to Tarmo Kink.

Reading manager Brian McDermott has heaped praise on latest recruit Ian Harte, who scored on his debut, and the former Leeds United left-back is in contention to start again for the Royals.

Hull City play Nottingham Forest in the day’s late kick-off, and the pressure was slightly eased off Hull manager Nigel Pearson’s shoulders after they beat Derby 2-0. Derby boss Nigel Clough though is certainly a man under pressure, as one win so far this season is not what the fans want. A match against an in-form Barnsley was probably the last thing he would have wanted.

Bottom-of-the-table Portsmouth continue to go from bad to worse. Coming off a 4-1 defeat to Crystal Palace and without a win, they face a trip to Sheffield United, while Bristol City play Coventry. Scunthorpe won 4-0 at Sheffield United in their last game, and they will play Swansea, with Palace taking on Burnley.
