Chan Peng Soon, Goh Liu Ying move into mixed doubles semi-final of India Open Super Series 2011
Malaysia’s Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying booked their place in the mixed doubles semi-final by beating Songphon Anugritayawon and Kunchala Voravichitchaikul of Thailand in the quarter-final of the India Open Super Series 2011 on Friday.
The fifth seeded couple of Peng Soon and Liu Ying consumed only 24 minutes to beat the second seeds, Songphon-Kunchala, who earlier defeated Ki Jung Kim and Kyung Eun Jung of Korea in the round-of-16.
The opening set was a completely one-sided affair as the Malaysian couple showed no mercy for the Thai duo and won the match by a good margin.
Right from the start of the first set, Peng Soon -Liu Ying built pressure on the opponents and remained successful in creating a good difference of 11-5 in the opening half of the set. Songphon-Kunchala tried to stop the progressive run of the opponents,
but failed as the Malaysians remained composed and perfect in their play.
After the one-minute interval, the Malaysians continued their superb run by playing positively. Despite the best efforts of the Thai duo, Peng Soon and Liu Ying remained successful in winning the opening set with a wonderful margin of 21-13 in just 11 minutes.
In the second set, Songphon-Kunchala played better badminton and remained close to the opponents by reaching 8-9. Peng Soon and Liu Ying scored two consecutive points and established their lead of 11-8 at the end of the first part of the second set.
The Malaysian couple remained quite focused and aggressive after the break. Songphon and Kunchala made many unforced errors at this crucial stage of the game that helped the Malaysians to reach 18-13. Both sides were trying their best to keep the bird low
from the net to get high clearances for powerful smashes.
Peng Soon and Liu Ying were quicker at the net and created many opportunities to execute powerful smashes. The Malaysian couple won the second game in just 13 minutes with a clear margin of 21-16. The final score of this one-sided match was 21-13 and 21-16.
