Chan Peng Soon – Goh Liu Ying should win one major event to continue their progress, says Jeremy Gan
Malaysia’s national coach for Mixed Doubles, Jeremy Gan, wants the top shuttlers Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying to win one major event in the current year as it is essential for their elevation at international stage.
Peng Soon and Liu Ying, who has been placed at number 11 in Mixed Doubles world rankings, are the only hope for the country to perform well in Olympic Games. They have been playing good badminton for the last six months and are on the right track of progress.
The top Malaysian players have recently delivered a tremendous performance as they reached in the semi-final of last week’s Malaysia Open Super Series.
In their road to glory in the home tournament, they defeated Cheng Wen Hsing and Chen Hung Ling, who are currently World Number Five, in an impressive fashion.
However, the Malaysia couple failed to overpower the World Number One and top seeds, Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei in China, and lost the match in straight games. The Chinese couple eventually won the title.
Peng Soon and Liu Ying are expected to break into top 10 on Thursday, when the Badminton World Federation will announce the world rankings.
Jeremy said that the duo lost to higher ranked Chinese opponents because of the lack of training. He also pointed out the confidence problem of the couple which caused them to throw away many points in the semi-final contest.
However, now he wants them to win at least one title in current year.
Jeremy said, “Peng Soon-Liu Ying have improved much over the past year but they gave the Chinese pair too much respect and lost focus. They also gave away many points. Now, my target for them is to win at least one title to boost their confidence.”
He further added, “But it won’t be easy as they had to play in quite a number of tournaments last year and did not have enough time to train. After the Chinese New Year period, however, there will be enough time to train for the German Open and All England.”
Now, Peng Soon and Liu Ying will spend more time in training sessions to eliminate their loop poles and deliver good performances in the upcoming tournaments.
