Chan Peng Soon participates in Kedah Open 2011 to test his fitness before the World Championships
Malaysia’s Chan Peng Soon is participating in the Kedah Open 2011 with the intention to determine how fit he is before the World Championships 2011. Peng Soon sustained a severe back injury and did not play after the Sudirman Cup, which was held in China,
in May.
Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying have been playing well in the proceeding year, as they reached at the Mixed Doubles semi-final stage in the India Open Super Series 2011 and also made it to the Top-4 in the Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold 2011.
However, a severe back injury forced Peng Soon to stay away from competitive badminton for more than four weeks. The player is now feeling a bit better, but wants to completely recover from the injury to participate in the World Championships 2011, which
will kick off in August, at London.
While talking about the injury, Peng Soon said, “The injury seems more serious than I initially thought because it has been two months and I’ve yet to recover.”
He further added, “It’s better now but it’s not fully recovered ... I am not sure whether I will recover in time to play in the World Championships (at Wembley from Aug 8-14).”
His intention at the Kedah Open is just to test his fitness, as he wants to get in perfect shape before the mega event.
While talking about his prospects in the Kedah Open, Peng Soon said, “I just want to try and play and see how my condition is after each match.”
Coach Jeremy Gan has separated Peng Soon and Goh Liu in the Kedah Open. Now Peng Soon will play with Chin Eei h*i and Goh Liu will contest the event with the partnership of Hoon Thien How.
Jeremy said, “He hasn’t fully recovered ... so I just want to let him play and get some court time. From there, we will assess his condition.”
A cloud of uncertainty hangs over the prospect of Peng Soon participating in the World Championships. However, after playing in the Kedah Open 2011, the player will be in a much better position to determine whether he can participate in the World Championship
2011 or not.
