Chan Peng Soon says Lee Chong Wei has better chances to win medal at London Olympics
Malaysia’s Mixed Doubles shuttler Chan Peng Soon said that the World Number Two Lee Chong Wei has greater chances as compared to him to win a gold medal at London Olympics, which will kick off in the ending week of July.
Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying, who are currently World Number 7 in Mixed Doubles world rankings, have been showing a steady performance at international level and many people think that they can win a medal at Olympics.
However, in order to relive a bit pressure from his shoulders, Peng Soon said that the competition is quite tough and all of their higher ranked opponents in world rankings have been winning top tournaments on consistent basis.
The shuttler also added that he with Liu Yin has never won any Super Series tournament so far and considering that, they have lower chances to bring a medal as compared to Men’s Singles shuttler Chong Wei.
He said, “People have been saying we have a chance. We are only ranked World No 7 and the six pairs above us are regular winners on the Super Series circuit. We haven't reached a Super Series final. I think Chong Wei is looking good to win a medal.”
Peng Soon also made it clear that he does not want to think about winning a medal as it brings more pressure.
He further added, “There have been doubts about Chong Wei because of his injury but I have seen him in training for the last few weeks and he is looking good. I don't want to add more pressure by thinking too much about winning a medal.”
Peng Soon said that reaching into quarter-final at Olympics will be a good result for the couple.
On the other hand, Chong Wei has been recovering fast from his ankle injury and is almost ready to compete at Olympics.
The 29-year-old Chong Wei, the silver medallist of 2008 Beijing Olympics, is widely considered as one of the best shuttlers the world has ever produced and he has a good prospect to win Malaysia’s first gold medal at London Olympics.
