Chan Yih-shin wins the Macau Open on Asian Tour – Golf news
Chan Yih-shin of Chinese Taipei displayed immense composure on the final day of the Macau Open on the Asian Tour on Sunday, to lift his second Asian Tour title at the scenic Macau Golf and Country Club. Chan has been struggling for almost a year now and
had not had single top-ten finish in the entire season.
Chan, after his wire-to-wire victory at the US$750,000 event said, “I didn’t putt very well in the beginning of the year and that was why I didn’t get a good result. This whole week was the best that I’ve putted and I’m glad to be able to come out victorious.”
Chan fell for a disastrous double-bogey on the opening hole of his front nine but came back quickly to make up for the loss. Most of the field struggled on the final day battling the windy course all throughout the day. Chan then pulled in a huge 40-feet
chip in before making the turn.
Chan, winner of the 2009 King’s Cup in Thailand said, “I didn’t know what to think after my double bogey but I kept telling myself to calm down. The pressure was there in the first nine and I felt better only after my chip in birdie.”
Mo Joong-kyung of Korea came out to be the only potent threat to Chan on the final day where he claimed the lead on several occasions. Chan played magically on the back nine birdying the 13, 14 and 16 respectively, to close for a two-under, 69, three shots
better than the rest of the field.
David Gleeson of Australia and Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand finished for an outright second and third position after their final round scores of five-under, 66. Gleeson played amazing golf all through the weekend, finally being able to end his five consecutive
missed cuts on the Asian Tour. The Australian revealed that his new golf gear as the reason behind his improved performance.
Chan not only bagged a winner’s cheque of US$118,875, but has also now reserved a berth on the Asian Tour circuit for the next two years.
