Chances for top-10 players in the Players Championship – Golf News
The 2012 Players Championship is about to begin, with 144 players getting ready to contend for the glory at the TPC Sawgrass, on Thursday, May 10, 2012.
In the meantime, there are a total of nine out of top-10 players participating in the event with one aim, to win the tournament known as the fifth major event of the year.
The only player among the top-10 in world rankings to drop from the event was Bubba Watson, who decided to take a week off in order to spend some time with his newly adopted son.
In light of the quality and caliber of players participating, a viciously competitive event may be expected.
However, a question arises whether a player from the top-10 would succeed in taking the trophy home?
The answer is really difficult to predict because of the layout of the course, as it could backfire for even the best golfers of the world.
One famous golf commentator said that a player does not need a caddie to unlock the hidden secrets of the Players Championship venue. In fact, he would either need a doctor’s or a priest’s or heaven's help.
“The best thing about The Players Championship isn’t the PGA Tour marketing division-driven “fifth major” status or the devious don’t-call-it-an-island peninsula green at the 17th hole,” a seniour golf writer, Jason Sobel said. “It’s the fact that this venue
doesn’t play to the strength of any one type of player”.
“We’ve seen big bombers and short knockers, great ball-strikers and precision putters all find success – and failure – on this course,” Sobel added.
Rory McIlroy, one of the top contenders, is enjoying his best form on the PGA Tour currently, and has jumped to the top of the world rankings because of his continuous efforts on the course.
He has never made the cut in two appearances made so far in the tournament. However, he cannot be judged by his record on the course, in fact, one must consider his recent form which matters the most.
Luke Donald has a proven track record at the Players Championship while Steve Stricker also holds a good record.
Phil Mickelson, on the other hand, is looking forward to record his 42nd career victory, especially after the induction of his name in the World Golf Hall of Fame.
Therefore, one can expect anything from this tournament, a surprise winner, just like last year’s winner, KJ Choi, or it may just be one of the highly anticipated ones, from the top-10.
