Question:

Chances of an induction failing?

Is that common? I mean I am scheduled for an induction on September 2nd (tuesday), my doctor says I check in at 5:30am and he will be there about 7 or 730 to break my water bag....what if he breaks my water but nothing happens, like no contractions or anything? Can't that be dangerous? I'm just kind of worried about that.

  1. After he breaks your water, if you dont start to have contractions on your own then they will give you petocin through your IV which helps you have contractions. dont worry you will have a happy and healthy baby! congrats and good luck.

  2. Well induction can go all kinds of ways.  It can go very fast, slow and very slow and sometimes end up in c-section.  But most of the time wants they break your water your contractions will start pretty good.  Expect to be there for a couple of days that's all I can tell you.

Good luck and congrats.  Im getting induced on the 6th

  3. Hey girl! I am an expert at this by now...lol

My induction failed miserably yesterday. 12 hours of a combo of the cervix ripening gel, pitocin and trying to break my water....I was less than a cm dilated so they couldn't break my water...Once they do break your water though, it's definitely D Day one way or another. I woke up in the middle of the night with my water broken, I guess they may have knicked it yesterday....I didn't get any contractions so I came back to the hospital and they started me on Pitocin again, (After I had to prove that my water did break...lol) Now I am just sitting here in the hospital praying this Pitocin works....They keep telling me I am going to need a C-Section.... I am so disapointed. :(

Not to scare you, but I didn't think it was very common but it can happen, it happened to me.... :(

    Good luck girl!:

  4. Your cervix is thick and dilated to 1cm and they are breaking your water?  That doesn't sound smart.  Talk to the doctor and see if they can use a prostaglandin gel or Pitocin first.  If  they just go and break your water and your cervix  isn't ripened and ready you can stall delivery or damage your cervix.  Call them and just double check what they plan to do...maybe you misunderstood?

ADD: Also,  the baby needs to be very low in order to break you water.  If the baby isn't low enough there is a chance that the cord will come down first and then you will have to have emergency c-section.  My doc called it "the ride of shame"...since they would have to manually hold the cord in you so it wouldn't get compressed by the baby...ugh!

    Best of luck dear!

  5. With an unfavourable cervix, inductions are much harder.  It can take a lot longer for an induction to start working, and sometimes the cervix doesn't dilate the way they would like.  Likely, they will give you pitocin if contractions don't start after breaking your water.  All too often, failed induction results in a c-section.  Although, they don't call it a failed induction - they will likely tell you that you 'failed to progress' during labour and a c-section is necessary.  If the induction isn't for medical reasons, then I would say no, and let nature take it's course.

  6. If your doctor is breaking your water then the baby is comming that day. It is dangerous to have your water broken if you are not dialated to a certain cm, but breaking water can also bring about contractions... IF your doctor was not going to break your water there would be a slim chance that the induction would not work, it happened to my mother with my sister the first time she was induced with her. The second time they broke her water and my sis was born. Good luck.

  7. just remember that they don't leave babies in...when i was about to pop had these weird thoughts that i would be pregnant forever.

i JUST sat with my best friend and her husband through her induction. they broke her water and after she was able to get up and move around a bit her contractions really started and in no time she was progressed and ready to push.

every labor and delivery is different...i went in to be induced and found out my baby girl was breech (don't worry...i had already suspected it...i'm sure this won't happen to you)

but if they were to break your water and you don't progress naturally at a healthy pace for your baby they may offer to give you pitosin to help your contractions along.

your baby will be monitored every moment with a fetal heart monitor so if at any point your baby seems to be in any distress they will be able to handle it.

it won't be long now until you are holding your baby in your arms! don

t worry...its all worth it for that!

  8. well if your cervix is still thick and you're only 1cm...it wouldnt be a good idea for them to just induce you by breaking your water....as yes, that could cause your induction to fail. I really hope they will give you cervadil or something first, which is something they put on your cervix, which helps to start thin you out and dilate you first. In your case, sounds like your little baby isnt quite ready yet....but I would hope they would do the cervadil, then break your water a little later, then maybe start some pitocin.

If you arent dilating or thinning out enough and they just break your water, you do have good chances of maybe not making any progress from them just breaking your water...and after 24 hours of it being broken, chances for infection increase, which could all in all lead to a c-section.

Ive been through 2 inductions...the first where I was 2cm, and they broke my water and gave me pitocin....had her 6 hours later, and with my 2nd, I was 4cm when they broke my water and he was here 4 hours later. I wish you luck!!!
