  1. You are guaranteed Cornell.

You are not, however, guaranteed Stanford. (I'm not trying to be rude; I just want to give you realistic expectations.) You have a decent shot at Stanford, which is more than about 95% of the population can say. =)

I got a 2350 on the SAT and a 34 on the ACT; I also took the same amount of AP courses as you did and a couple less Honors. My grades were slightly worse than yours (more A-'s) but I had a few more extracurriculars and volunteer hours. I took college courses at a community college and I was a National Merit Semifinalist.

I did not get into Stanford, and my essays were pretty good (I was the editor-in-chief of my school newspaper). The thing about schools like Stanford is that they are looking for a distinct and focused passion. They want someone who learns for the sake of learning. All of their applicants look like you and me, and not to toot my own horn or anything, but a 2350-2360 on the SAT is a very good score.

I think you have a decenrt chance. You have the grades and the overall resume and the test scores. Spend a lot of time on the essay. Stanford doesn't offer interviews, so your essay is your only chance to show them your personality. Submit an extra recommendation (I submitted one from a volunteer organization I worked for).

I really hope you get it; it's such a highly-regarded and academically powerful school! Keep up what you've been doing; like I said, you have a decent shot at this. Not many people do.

  2. looks pretty good to me! Just don't let up on the entrance essay and you should nail it!

  3. 33 on the ACT ? I thought the top grade possible on it was a 32

  4. you should have no problem

  5. How are your references? Any from Stanford or Cornell alumni?

How well do you write? Can you convey your reasons for wanting to attend either school in a compelling and concise manner?

How have you made a difference in the lives of your peers? Do you tutor or participate in group projects?

Do you make time to help those less fortunate than you?

    Good luck!

Nick is correct. My daughter's profile was similar to yours, and she didn't get into Stanford but did get into 3 Ivy League schools and she attended UPenn.

Stanford is always looking for bright students, but they also want them to be individuals. Think of who you'd find interesting to be with or want to sit next to at a dinner for the most enthralling conversation.

BTW--Stanford is now free for anyone of middle class or poorer. Write a great essay and try to get in there!
