I heard UCLA has a low acceptance rate for asians...

Well..I'm asian..

My freshman GPA: 4.0

My sophomore GPA: 3.7

My clubs: Red Cross, Gate club, Environmental, CSF

I Volunteer at the library: 120 hours so far

Yeah..First two years wasnt so great. I'm an incoming junior. I'm planning to join: AcaDeca team, Tennis, Track n Field, CSF, and National Honors Society.

I'm going to volunteer another 100+ hours at the library.

My classes for next year are: Avid 3, PreCal Honors, Tennis, English 3 AP, US History Honors, Chemistry Honors, Spanish 2

The clubs are almost the same: Red Cross, Environmental, GATE, CSF

I'm taking the SAT, ACT, SAT II a total of 3 times (each)

Should I be worried? Obviously I dont have the upper hand to make it to UCLA...My dream colleges are UC Berkeley and Columbia University...But I can't even have a high chance of making it to UCLA!

In percentage wise, what are my chances of getting accepted to UCLA?

  1. I can understand that yearning to get into the school of your choice - it sounds like you want it really bad and that's wonderful.  I went to a school with 60% vietnamese, 20% filipino, and the other 20% were the other ethnicities.  I'm asian myself, and I saw many, many, many rejections from UCLA.  It's a tough school to be accepted to.  Even as a transfer student, colleges are more open to accepting transfer students - My friend tried to transfer to UCLA with a 3.7 GPA and crazy extracurricular activities inbcluding international figure skating - poor girl was heart broken when she was rejected.  If you are going into your junior year of high school, take a bunch of honors and AP classes so you can get your GPA over a 4.0 because it's very competitive and they'll probably only accept freshmen with GPA's above 4.0 (this is what I've seen.)  Do apply and don't cease to do your best even if it looks like LA is a longshot - you're working very hard and you will get into a GREAT college with your grades and activities - trust me!

I forgot to mention every college also bases acceptance on your major.  If you are majoring in something popular for UCLA such as communications or psychology, your chances will be lower because lots of people will be taking up space, but a less popular major like English or something could be your ticket in!

I had to work my butt off just to get into UC Davis and that's one of the easier UC's to get into!  They only accept freshmen with GPA's over 4.0 also!  It's crazy competitive -

Keep your hopes up for L but your mind open to other colleges as well, you will end up in the right place if your mind is open to it!  Congratulations on whatever happens to you and bets of luck!!

  2. My cousin got in with

4.1 GPA and a 1150 SAT with similar extracurricular as yours a few years ago.

Edit: My cousin is Asian as well.  A mix of Thai/Chinese.
