Anyone on here a student at an equestrian college? (majoring/minoring in equine sciences or studies)

If so, is it very competitive to get in to such schools?

Do you NEED to have showing experience?

And also, do most students have their own horses?

Just trying to be realistic with myself.

  1. Many state schools have equine studies.  I'm sure there is a school with equine studies that you can get into.  You do not need showing experienced and many riders do not have their own horses.  Show the admissions committee that you have worked hard in school and are mature enough to work with horses.

  2. From what I've researched, it seems like as long as you have respectable grades and an interest in hroses, there shouldn't be too much competition. Showing experience usually isn't necessary and the colleges have lab farms or horses that you can use and ride. Just go for it!

  3. well i was at a state school for equine science. i looked at the equestrian school st. andrews. if you have good grades, it's not a prob to get into and they are a very good school. you do not need show experience and they have 72 school horses so u don't need a horse either. www.sapc.edu. what kept me from going was the money.....:( but also check out state schools! ours has an equestrian team and everything for a cheaper price tag!

  4. i dont go but i did go for a try out at hartpury college in Gloster. Its quite a majour college, they hold an eventing competition which qualifies for Badminton Horse trials.

it isnt that competative to get in, you just need to send out your finantial application form asap.

you dont need showing expirence, you just need to be able to ride at a BHS level 3 and know how to tack up, muck out etc...

    good luck.

  5. Depends on which school you go to.  All have different admissions requirements and different levels of competition to get in.

Colorado State, for example, is quite easy to get into.  To major in Equine Science, you don't need any experience and don't need your own horse.  All you need is an interest in horses.

  6. penn state has a whole ag science program, pre-vet, ect. . . pre-vet and all basic equine areas arent hard to get into, it's the next level up that gets extremely hard.

it depends as well on the school, del-valley, (best equine programs i have seen) is NOT hard to get into, but it isnt a walk in the park either, just have good grades. . . to my knowledge you dont need to have show experience. . . equine science is about the horse, not all about riding all day long. .. you still have all your basic college classes to finish, as well as the equine load that starts more in your second year.

all program start with the basics. (no matter if your a bizz major, equine or pre med... you have to take all the basic classes)
