Chances of having twins

here's the background of my family. (all fraternal twins)

- my great great grandmother had FOUR sets of twins.

- my great grandmother (one of those twins) had one set of twins. (but they died at birth.)

- my grandmother (my great grandmothers sister) had one set of twins.

- that one set of twins was my mother and her sister, but weirdly neither of them had twins (6 pregnancies between both of them)

how likely is it that i have inherited the hyper ovulation gene? does anyone know the statistics or anything

  1. im pretty sure it doesnt have anything to do with family history

    its just a coincidence

but the chance of faternal twins is 1 in 80

and identical is 1 in 250

  2. The chances of twins are aprox. 3 in 100

  3. non-identical twins ARE a genetic thing, based on the mother releasing multiple eggs each month.  Identical twins ARE NOT, they're random duplications (or even more divisions for triplets etc.).  I don't know how much your chances increase with each incidence in your family though, I study genetics but I don't specifically study twins.

  4. its not based on family

  5. I thought my chances were good too however, I had twins lost one at 6 weeks, my father's mother is a twin, my dads sister had twins lost one at 12weeks, and my mothers mom sister and brother are twins... you just have to see

and can emmabee2... contact me please I have a question for you about disorders etc....

  6. chances arnt real good, its just by chance it think

  7. I would say you do have a higher than average chance than a normal person

Fraternal twins ARE genetic. If conceived naturally (and not via IVF or something) it meant that the mother released two or more eggs at once during an ovulation cycle. If the child/children are girls, they are more likley (but not absolute) to have the same menstrual patterns as her mother, including her ovulation patterns, and thus the release of more than one egg. Thats why they say if your mother got bad pms you will too....a mother and daughters menstrual cycle are normally very similar, as the mother passes her own genes onto her child. If the mothers genetic makeup means she is more likely to release one egg at once, then the daughter is more likely to inherit this particular trait than an average person

Identical twins are a coincidence. They are a random event when the already fertilised egg decided to split in half

You have a greater chance than most at having fraternal twins, however in terms of an exact statistic it is impossible to say. You may not have inherited this ovulation pattern at all, or you may have 4 sets of twins like your great great grandmother

    Goodluck!
