Chanel Simmonds slaughters Charlotte Roemer to enter quarters – Potchefstroom ITF 2012
Local star, Chanel Simmonds, devastated the Ecuadorian challenger, Charlotte Roemer, with double breadsticks at the Potchefstroom ITF 2012 on Wednesday. She jolted down a 6-1, 6-1 victory against the 18-year-old to power into the quarter-finals at this ITF
(International Tennis Federation) Women’s Circuit event taking place in Potchefstroom, South Africa.
Seeded top in this event, Simmonds displayed top notch skills to crush Roemer in their first meeting. After carving out the victory in almost an hour, the South African comfortably booked a spot in the last eight at this outdoor hard court tournament taking
place from 3rd to 9th December.
The local seed made a thunderous entry at the Fanie du Toit Sports Stadium. She drew the first blood in the opening game and jumped to a 3-0 lead. After the Ecuadorian held her serve in the fourth game, Simmonds winded up following three games and clinched
the opener with a breadstick. She blocked the lone breakpoint she came across to keep her entire serves and cashed half of the six break opportunities to rule the set.
Standing at her career best rank at 177th in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Simmonds carried her winning ways in the following set. She unleashed barrage of groundstrokes and reeled off five games in a row before Roemer
could hold on. The South African plucked her serve again and clinched the set with an assuring 6-1 score line. She was never challenged with any breakpoint and converted all three break chances to her advantage.
Simmonds is currently in great run of form. She cruised to the final showdown at the Lagos ITF event where she lost to fifth seeded Cristina Dinu in a three-set thriller. The South African also reached semis at the Rockhampton ITF (lost to second seed Sacha
Jones) and the Port Pirie ITF (lost to top seed Olivia Rogowska).
Next in line for Simmonds is the seventh seed, Estelle Cascino from France. The seeded French overpowered the Indian challenger, Sharon Sanchana Paul, in straight sets to set up this meeting. Cascino eased past the French with a 6-2, 6-3 score line in almost
one and a half hour.
