Chanelle Scheepers crushes Bojana Jovanovski to enter quarters – Guangzhou Open 2012
Defending champion, Chanelle Scheepers from South Africa, devastated the Serbian challenger, Bojana Jovanovski, with a breadstick at the Guangzhou International Women’s Open 2012 on Wednesday. She juggled up a 6-4, 6-1 victory against the world number 58
to power into the quarter-finals at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event held in Guangzhou, People’s Republic of China.
The South African number stayed on track to grab her second career title after stomping over Scheepers in straight sets. Encountering each other for the first time, Scheepers convincingly advanced into the final eight at this outdoor hard court event.
Scheepers made a powerful entry at the Guangzhou International Tennis Center. She drew the first blood in the opening game and took the initial lead. Apart from losing her edge in the very next game, the South African unleashed her true colours and reeled
off four games in a row.
Ranked 43rd in the WTA Premier Rankings, Scheepers carried her rhythm in the following set. She got the critical break in the opening game and took a 1-0 lead again. Apart from losing her edge in the very next game, the South African star went
berserk again and winded up five games consecutively.
Seeded fifth in this tournament, Scheepers spilled more unforced errors but produced a better first serve share of 65 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 63 per cent. She also brilliantly marked 19 out of 33 points on it and sealed the match with 63 points.
The South African also warded off three out of six breakpoints she faced and converted seven out of 11 break opportunities to her advantage.
Next in queue for Scheepers is the conqueror of the match between fourth seeded Urszula Radwanska and the Luxembourgian star, Mandy Minella.
The eighth seed, Alize Cornet, will join the South African in the last eighth. The French star recorded a 6-4 retirement victory against Belarus’ Olga Govortsova in 54 minutes to reach this spot. Cornet was broken once but cashed in both break chances to
pocket the opening set.
Cornet will face off the winner of the match between seventh seeded Shuai Peng and the Thai qualifier, Nudnida Luangnam.
