Chanelle Scheepers defeats Su-Wei Hsieh in second round – 2011 WANLIMA Women’s Open
South African tennis pro Chanelle Scheepers defeated Su-Wei Hsieh in three tight sets 3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-1 on Wednesday to book her place in the quarterfinal of 2011 WANLIMA International Women’s Open here in Guangzhou, China.
Seeded seventh at the Women’s Tennis Association tournament, Scheepers has been in commanding form since the start of this week. In the first round play, she came back from a set deficit to crush Sevastova. Looking in confident
mood, the South African has been playing the big points really well. If she can maintain her impressive form for the next few matches, she has a great chance of claiming her first eve WTA title.
Qualifier, Su Wei Hsieh will be disappointed with the result of the match. She was dominant early on as she clinched the opening set 6-3. However, as the match progressed, her shine faded away as she started to leak crucial points.
Making a large number of unforced errors in second and third sets, she really did not help herself. Still inexperienced at the international level, the Chinese will be looking to learn from her mistakes and come back stronger on her next WTA appearance.
Ranked 215th in the world, Hsieh made a very decent start to the contest. Timing the ball really well, she executed her game plan to perfection from deep behind the baseline. It will not be wrong to say that she looked
in complete control of the situation until the end of first set. The Chinese smashed a gorgeous forehand winner down the line to make her second serve break of the set as she took a handsome 5-3 lead. Claiming three straight points, she pocketed the set to
take 1-0 set score lead.
Hsieh displayed some high quality tennis in the following set as well. Breaking the serve at regular intervals, she played her natural game freely. Scheepers also raised the level her game play and she broke back twice to stay
in the set and force it into a tie-breaker. Showing great fighting skills in the tie-breaker, she dented her opponent’s confidence levels to force the match into a decider.
Scheepers completely dominated the challenger in all areas of the game in third and final set. Showing her aggressive intent, she used the hit and volley technique to great effect. Dropping only a game in the set, she sealed another
great victory to keep her campaign alive at WTA tournament. World number 73 will be eyeing another strong performance in her next match-up.
