Chanelle Scheepers dispatches Stephanie Dubois in the opening clash – Rogers Cup 2012
World number 41, Chanelle Scheepers, ousted the 25-year-old Canadian starlet, Stephanie Dubois, in the opening clash of the Rogers Cup at the hard courts of Montreal, Canada. She bounced back a set down to oust the local wildcard
entrant in three sets 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Four years ago, the 28-year-old South African had lost to the 155th ranked Canadian in straight sets during the second round contest at Waikoloa. So, she was on the revenge mission as well. The first set battering opened
up her eyes and she regrouped in the break between the sets; smashed back at the local and trounced her in a battle of an hour and 50 minutes.
Talking to the media reporters after the match, Scheepers said, “She's been Top 100 and has done really well in Canada before, so I knew I was in for a tough match today. She started out really well and the crowd was behind her,
too, but I found my feet and started making her play longer points, and I was able to turn the match around in the second set. We had long rallies and it was very physical. We both competed very well."
Dubois commenced the match with four straight points to hold serve and broke serve winning four of the five points contested on her opponent’s serve. So, it was a commanding start for the Canadian starlet who had the support of
her home crowd.
Both players exchanged breakpoints in the following two games to push the scores further. A serve hold for the local helped her mount a lead of 4-1. She trashed her rival and won another breakthrough that helped her to win the
opening set.
First six games of the second set witnessed consecutive trade of breakpoints. However, a successive serve hold for the visitor coupled with another breakthrough helped her to stride past her opponent in the second phase of the
match.
Dubois saved three breakpoints in the first game of the final set before falling apart on the fourth occurrence. It was that moment when the 41st ranked South African picked up momentum and thrashed her opponent to an
emphatic bagel.
Chanelle Scheepers squares off against 14th seed Flavia Pennetta.
