Chanelle Scheepers dumps Jarmila Gajdosova to reach round two – Internazionali BNL D’Italia 2012
South African number one, Chanelle Scheepers, tumbled over the Australian contender, Jarmila Gajdosova, in straight sets at the Internazionali BNL D’Italia 2012 on Monday. She joggled up a 6-4, 7-6(3) victory against the world number 69 to charge into the
second round at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory event taking place in Rome, Italy.
Scheepers got the better of the Slovakian-born Gajdosova after warding off late resistance in their second encounter. After earning the limelight in one hour and 42 minutes, the South African not only improved to 2-0 in the head-to-head series against Gajdosova
but also secured a place in the round of 32.
The 28-year-old thundered into Foro Italico and drew the first blood in the opening game to put her nose ahead. Apart from losing her serve in the very next game, Scheepers remaining calm and availed another break chance in the fifth game. She plucked her
remaining serves and sealed the opener by winning six games to four.
Ranked 50th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Scheepers kept momentum running into the follow-up set and wiped out the opening three games in a row before the Aussie broke back. She capitalised on another break chance and jumped to a 5-2 lead. Despite
squandering her chances to serving out the set, the South African lost the proceeding four games successively and enforced a tie-breaker. However, the South African leaped to a 5-0 lead in it before carving out the victory with a 7-6(3) score line.
Overall, Scheepers fully capitalised on several unforced errors and eight double faults her opponent committed. She jolted down a better first serve share of 69 per cent as compared to the Aussie’s 54 per cent and impressively marked 32 out of 46 points
on it.
Up next for Scheepers is the conqueror of the match between 11th seeded Sabine Lisicki and New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic.
Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson will accompany Scheepers in the proceeding round. She stomped over the Spanish veteran, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, in straight sets in just under an hour. The Swede was broken three times but capitalised on six out of eight break
opportunities to manipulate a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
