Chanelle Scheepers gets rid of Rebecca Marino in 1st round – Western & Southern Open 2011
South African Chanelle Scheepers got rid of Canadian Rebecca Marino in the first round of the Western and Southern Open 2011. The two were competing for the second time on the hard courts of the Lindner Family Tennis Center in
Mason, Ohio. 27-year-old Scheepers ousted the Canuck (Marino) with a 7-5, 6-2 victory in 1 hour, 12 minutes and 29 seconds.
Scheepers served with revenge and had a consistent exceptional serve during her first and second serves, which enabled her to win 22 out of 31 points, making it praiseworthy seventy one percent win in her total service points,
in opposition to Marino, who was 57% of her total service points.
Both the players had relatively similar win in the first return but in the second return Scheepers had a far better performance, hence, she won 43% of her total return points against her opponent, who scored a pitiable 29% win
in her total return points.
Marino had struck 7 out break points out of which she was only able to save 5, thus giving Scheepers an opportunity to break her twice, which, of course she availed. Mean while, Scheepers had a relatively stable defence and was
able to save 50% of her break points.
By accomplishing 55% of her total set points, Scheepers won the set with a 7-5 victory.
As Scheepers powered through the first set, the second set was easily conquered and she put her world number 39 (Marino) rival to shame. In the next 35 minutes Scheepers closed the deal by bagging 63% of her total set points, which
were almost twice as many as her adversary’s.
With an immaculate defence Scheepers did not set up a single opportunity for her opponent to break her, instead she broke her opponent twice and was able to capitalize on the 100% of break points won whereas, Marino was unable
to save any of the two break points on her serve.
Marino not only had a failing defence but her serve was an average performance that won her 55% of her total service points, along with, a failing backhand she was only able to attain 4 out of 21 points, making it a pathetic 19%
win in her total return points.
Scheepers restricted the 20 year-old Canuck to just two games and won the set by accomplishing 63% of her total set points, against Marino, who bagged almost half her score, making it only a 37% win.
The last time the two had met was on a carpet surface during the third round in Canada, Marino had won the match with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 victory. This was a chance given by the Higher Power to the 27-year-old to take her vengeance.
