Chanelle Scheepers outguns Coco Vandeweghe in the opening draw – Mercury Insurance Open 2012
American tennis prodigy, Coco Vandeweghe, failed to continue her sublime run of form at the Mercury Insurance Open, falling out in the very first round of the tournament on Tuesday. The eighth seeded South African, Chanelle Scheepers,
ended her voyage in Carlsbad, California, by nailing a cracking straight sets victory, 6-2, 7-6(4), to reach the round of 16.
Vandeweghe was absolutely ballistic in her Stanford campaign but her magic didn’t work on the outdoor hard courts of Carlsbad. She battled for one hour and 44 minutes before bowing out to the world number 42 in the second set of
the match. It was the second defeat she suffered from Scheepers, as the South African was also victorious in their 2009 encounter in Laguna Nigel, USA.
The American wildcard entrant was badly damaged by her error-ridden game play in the match. She kept spilling unforced errors to all parts of the court, including six taxing double faults to award un-fought points to Scheepers.
Vandeweghe had her chances in the contest but couldn’t convert those opportunities in time. She frittered away nine break points and registered merely one break of serve in the entire matchup to finish on the losing side in the end. On the other hand, the
eighth seeded South African belted three out of six break points to get the better of her opponent.
Vandeweghe was on her back foot early in the opening set when Scheepers stung her first break of serve in the third game to lead 2-1. She further built up her momentum in the set and broke her opponent once again in the seventh
game. The South African had no troubles in serving out of the first set at 5-2, bagging the opener to get one up in the contest.
A more conventional game was witnessed in the following set, with both contenders holding their serve in the opening 10 games to take the scores to 5-5. An exchange of break points dragged the set into a tie-break at 6-6 and Scheepers
continued with her winning roll to conclude victory at 7-6(4). She will next face Varvara Lepchenko in the second round of the tournament.
