Chanelle Scheepers slays Qiang Wang to reach round two – Guangzhou International Women’s Open 2012
Fifth seed, Chanelle Scheepers, devastated the local wild card recipient, Qiang Wang, with a bagel at the Guangzhou International Women’s Open 2012 on Monday. She jolted down a 6-0, 6-3 victory against the 20-year-old to power into the second round at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International-level event taking place in China.
The South African number one reeled off nine games in a row and eventually outfoxed Wang in their first encounter. After earning success in one hour and 12 minutes, she edged in the head-to-head series against the Chinese and booked a spot in the second round at this outdoor hard court event.
Scheepers enthusiastically entered the Guangzhou International Tennis Center. She unleashed barrage of powerful forehands to wind up six games in a row. The South African plucked her entire serves without facing any hindrance and converted three out of four break chances to her advantage.
Ranked 43rd in the WTA Premier Rankings, Scheepers maintained her intensity in the following set. She swiftly swiped her entire serves without facing any real challenge. The South African required a single break opportunity in the second game and pulled out the set with a 6-3 score line.
Summing up performance of the 28-year-old, Scheepers spilled more double faults and produced a lower first serve share of 63 per cent as opposed to her rival’s 65 per cent. However, she impressively availed 24 out of 30 points on it and finished the match with 61 points.
Next up for the seed is Serbia’s Bojana Jovanovski who crushed the Hungarian star, Timea Babos, with a breadstick to set up this meeting.
The British starlet, Laura Robson, will accompany Scheepers in the round of 16. She registered a 6-2, 3-1 retirement victory against Spain’s Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor in 65 minutes to progress. The Brit lost her serve once but cashed in four out of eight break chances to dominate the battle. She spilled six double faults but spectacularly marked 14 out of 16 points on her first serve share.
Next in line for Robson is the conqueror of the match between second seeded Jie Zheng and Taiwan’s Yung-Jan Chan.
