Chanelle Scheepers struggles past Urszula Radwanska into the semi-final –WANLIMA Women’s Open 2011
Seventh seed Chanelle Scheepers came back from a set down to register an impressive win. The South African recorded an emphatic 4-6, 7-6 (8), 6-3 over Polish Urszula Radwanska on Thursday to book her place in semi-finals in Guangzhou,
China.
Earlier in the second round, she ousted the inform Su-Wei Hsieh 3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-1. In the first round play, she had to change her gears to come up victorious against Anastasija Sevastova. She is looking extremely confident right
now. Her shot selection on the big points has been brilliant and if she can maintain the current level of her play in the upcoming matches, she could win her first ever Women’s Tennis Association title here in China. Scheepers made eleven double faults but
she outplayed her opponent in finer details of the game.
The South African tennis pro is certainly looked to be in her comfort zone as she had no problems controlling the rallies and although she was broken on a number occasion in the match, the overall quality of her game play was quite
outstanding. Using her agility and admirable footwork, she was able to get closer to even some of the difficult balls. Saving crucial points against her, her defence was also formidable.
World number 105 Radwanska, on the other hand, had a solid start to the match as broke her opponent at regular intervals. Hitting her big forehand and backhand winners all over the court, she took the set score lead 1-0.
However, she was unable to raise her game to the required level in closing stages of second set. Struggling to handle the pressure, the Polish made several unforced errors in the tie-breaker, which allowed Scheepers to come back
into the contest. Making six double faults in the match, the Pole dropped her serve at crucial stages. Hitting only 58 per cent first serve, she was unable to take control of important points.
