Chanelle Scheepers upsets Sofia Arvidsson in final qualifying round – Cincinnati Open 2011
Sunday, was a major upset for the world number 58 Sofia Arvidsson, who lost in straight sets against the world number 101, Chanelle Scheepers at the Cincinnati Open 2011. Scheepers won 6-1, 6-4 at the Lindner Family Tennis Centre
in Mason, Ohio.
The two were meeting for the first time and were not familiar with each other’s styles and technique. Both the players had immaculate precision though neither of them struck an ace. Arvidsson lost most of her points because of
attaining a poor score in her first and second serve and managed to barely achieve 5 out of 19, which amassed to 26% of the total service points.
Scheepers, on the other hand, had a better serve due to her strong forearm and well placed shots, she was able to achieve 56% of her total service points. Nevertheless, her return was far better than her serve, which aided her
to win a praiseworthy 74% of her total return points and with her strong back hand was able to reply to her opponent’s serve by recoiling most of her shots.
The South African (Scheepers) had a failing defence, which resulted in her saving 1 out of the 4 break points and capitalizing on 13% of break points won, along with, a poor return she lost the set with almost half as less points
as the Swede’s (Arvidsson).
By the second set, the tone was set and even though, Arvidsson had tried to make a comeback, she failed miserably and lost both the sets and the match in simply 72 minutes.
Amidst the second set both the players had a filing precision with Scheepers striking 2 foot faults and Arvidsson striking one double fault, however, she also aced three times and won extra points.
During the first serve both the players had an exceptional win, with a one percent difference in each other’s scores, however, Scheepers maintained her powerful serves and clogged 64% wins in her total service points, while, Arvidsson
could only clench 55% wins in her total service points.
The two saw a sharp decline in their returns with Arvidsson clinching 36% and the 27-year-old South African bagging a mediocre 45% in their total returns.
Scheepers gained a competitive edge by saving and winning an extra break point than Arvidsson, and hence, was able to accomplish the set by scoring 35 out of 64, making it an average win of 55% in the total set score, which was
6 points more than the 27-year-old Arvidsson.
Although both the players generally had similar style and technique, luck and a little hard work gave Scheepers an edge as she was easily able to gain acceptance in the main draw of the Cincinnati Open 2011.
