Question:

Change in stool in my three year old male cockatiel.

Our three year old male cockatiel, Rosco, has a sudden change in his stool consistency and color. We have not had a recent change in diet or cage location, and have not done anything different to his lifestyle in recent months.

Rosco's stools come out runny/wet, but with a slightly dark color than normal. The odd thing is when they dry on the bottom of the cage, the stool is rather large, round, resembling a corn pop (cereal) or a kernel of corn looks a little like a peanut??? Bumpy and sponge like looking and the stool is hard at this time.

No change in his personality, with the exception of cocking his head slightly to the side He is a bit more timid, though and his feathers look a bit tossled.

He shares his condo with Birdie, his wife. At this point, she appears to be fine, although I don't notice any "regular" looking stools at the bottom of the cage, leading me to wonder if her stools are the same as his now.

Please send any suggestions/advise. All is welcome.

We will be calling a vet later today - but wanted to get started with consultation - thanks a bunch.

  1. Hi,

If you go to this page:

    http://www.ivis.org/home.asp

and doing your free registration, you could download a free copy of  chapter 8th   from the book: Avian Medicine: Principles and Application.

There you can see a full color plate with several abnormal avian depositions with its description and causes.

Anyway if you see another atypical symptoms in your pet, maybe is time to visit the avian vet.
