Change last name after married as I hold greencard?

I want to change my last name to my husband last name after married 3 yeards, as I hold greencard now. Where and what I should go and do? And what document I have to preapre? And how much that I have to pay? And how long it will be legal? And what benefit that I will have for the future if I do this??

  1. I believe that you can change your last name to your husband's surname upon a legal marriage having taken place. I think you should talk to the people in the immigration office to find out the specifics.  Maybe you have to apply for citizenship, social security, etc. It is best to have proper info and not assume anything.  Good luck and congratulations to you and your new spouse.


  2. Last names on the Alien card need to be changed as soon after the marriage took place! They can penalize you for that if you are 3 years late to do so! You need to live here in this country for 5 years and take a citizen test for which you need to learn , read ,write ,speak English and you need to get in contact with the Immigration service in the State that you live in ! If you live in a bigger town they might have one close to you .

    They will need to see your ID card and the marriage license etc.

  3. Just go to the social security office near you and they will help you out.
