Question:

Change light fixture to a ceiling fan?

I have a light fixture in a bedroom and I want to install a ceiling fan. Its difficult to change because the wires go into the attic and there is not room that I can get to to run the wiring. Is there a way to use the existing wiring or add to it to make it work?

  1. make sure your electrical box is secure enough for extra weight. older houses didn't use a green wire(ground) some used conduit for ground! if you have all 3 colors, yes, you can use them. if no ground, you need to run a ground to it for safety, and code.

  2. YES ITS TE SAME THING.

Three wires white, black and ground. simply intall the bracket to hang the fan and then wire it with the wires already there...

the ground should atacth to the bracket and the white and black should atack to the fan wiring.

make sure you do it all in order or you will have to pull stuff apart and start over. i mean the bracket and swivel for the fan you will see follow the instructions.

dont forget to turn off the breaker FIRST!

  3. You DO use the wiring that is there now. Remove the light and the wires will be there for you to see. You DO NOT have to go into the attic. Every ceiling fan I have seen comes with instructions how to hook it up.

If you need extra help go to my profile and e-mail me. I can help you through it if you need.

It's not a hard job at all. Just ne POSITIVE the electric is off to the light.

  4. Yes, but it will be quite tricky to conform to the building codes in your region.

I recommend re-wiring the entire circuit from the circuit-breaker to the new (intended) fan box so as to prevent any fire hazards.

  5. Yes you can. You may need to change out the box that the lighty hangs from to a ceiling rated box. Also you can buy fans that come with a controler built in so you can control the fan and light seperate.

  6. You should be able to use the existing wires.  Call home depot or lowes and talk to a specialist to make sure.

  7. You can use the existing wiring. You just wire the fan and the light to the hot wire in the ceiling box. The light switch will turn the power on to the fan and light.  You will also be able to turn these on and off with the pull chains that come With the fan.

  8. I have done a lot of maintenance and the best way is to get the instructions and look for the set up that you have . the white wire is hot , the black is common and the blue and green go to their respective wires. so,..... white to white , bl;ack to black and green to green and blue to blue.
