Question:

Change my child's godfather?

The godfather of my 7 year old daughter is no longer my friend anymore. Him and I were very close friends for 15 years and are no longer friends due to his low immaturity level and bad additude which I want nothing to do with and him not even showing any sort of interest in my daughters life. Has never once took timeout to come see her, never once asked me how she is doing, and he recently became a father himself and him and his wife did not even invite me or my wife who is also friends with them to their christening of their child. I have not spoken to him in about 4 months. I would not wanting him to care for my daughter if god forbid anything bad should happen. Is there a way I could change her godfather to a different person? And if so how would I go upon doing this? Do I need to contact my church?

  1. The role of a Godfather is not to take physical custody if something should happen to you, it's to affirm at the baptism that they will watch over the child and ensure their religious education - to make sure you are teaching them or having them taught in the beliefs of your church.  You should have a will that includes legal decisions for your child should anything happen to you.  Two completely separate issues.
