  1. It can be done by a home mechanic, but you really have to know what you are doing as there is a very good chance of wrecking your engine should you make a mistake on the positioning of the sprockets driven by the refitted belt (timing) or of tension on the new belt.

    It's best left to the professionals if you are unaware of how important the timing belt is at making sure that expensive metal parts inside your engine (i.e. Pistons and valves) are kept from being smashed together at great speed.
