Change who you are? Or make them accept?

Question

Do you think that in order for a relationship to work both parties have to change who they are and what they like to do to please one another? Or should you expect your significant other to accept you for who you are whether or not they like it?

In order for any relationship to work, you must be yourselves. That is how you met right? Otherwise, why would there be a relationship. If either party changes in a relationship just for the other person, and it makes them a different person, they may come to resent the fact they made that change, and that will end in a downward spiral for the relationship. Don't get me wrong, some changes are for the good, but when it comes to who a person is, why would you want to mold them into what you want and change them, when that was who you came to be with.

I don't think you should ever have to change who you are.  You may have some bad habits that could use some tuning up but if you need to change who you are as a person than its not worth it. You have to love someone, faults and all or I don't think it will ever be real.

You cannot live your life pretending to be someone you are not.

Being in a relationship is not supposed to be an "as is" sort of affair. Of course your partner should like you, in general, as a person. But we all have to change in certain ways in order to accommodate our new life with someone else. It's more along the lines of compromise though in my mind.

Well, if you have truly found the right person, then you shouldn't have to change.  But in practice people settle for whatever and that's why you always hear all this talk about compromise and sacrifice.

You should not change who you are. You should love and accept each other for who you are. If you do not you should not stay together. Changing for them will only be temporary and will cause resentment.
