Question:

Changes at CBS News?

A Wall Street Journal article recently revealed that Katie Couric is unhappy with her role at the CBS Evening News and may even step down from the anchor desk after the next inauguration. This would represent a major setback for an already troubled news division that has poured $15 million a year into Ms. Couric's salary.

At the same time in 2009, we know that Bob Schieffer will be stepping down as chief Washington correspondent and moderator of Face the Nation. Schieffer is widely regarded as the mainstay at the network; honest, dependable and fair. Without him, the network might do even worse.

So what does CBS News do? I think that if Couric steps down, an effort must be made to revamp the news department: make it a great organization again. Hire someone like Anderson Cooper or even take Russ Mitchell or Lara Logan to inject some hard news into the Evening News. Do away with the orange/blue graphics and lengthy features. Hire someone like Chris Wallace for politics.

  1. I think there is a growing sentiment that CBS/NBC/ABC/NYtimes/LATimes etc. all say the same thing so there really is no point and no substantive difference between any of them.  All of their content is almost identical and you can tell this by looking at their on-line stories.  So I guess things like the personalities you mentioned are the only differentiator.  Although anyone who cares about the news does not care who the talking head is.
