Changing DNS Server?

Somebody has recomended to me that I should change my DNS server so that I'm not using the ISP's one. Is the ISP going to have a problem with this? I'm not particularly technical so I want to research the issue thouroughly before I do anything.

  1. I'm not sure why you would want to do that - it sounds like everything is working fine for you now

If it isn't broke why try to fix it

  2. Normally your router has the IPs of your ISPs DNS server and then you point to the router as your DNS server. The router forwards on all requests.

No there is no problem using your ISPs DNS servers directly.

But what may happen is the ISP might change their DNS servers. Then you won't be able to query them and you will be stuck wondering why you can't connect to websites.

Its better to use your routers IP as your DNS server and then leave the router pickup the correct DNS servers from the ISP.

  3. its easy without a hitch

the sloweest part now in an internet connection is usually now with the dns service

Isps are lazy in changing or updating anything until they are forced to

    Go to open dns

    http://www.opendns.com/

all you do is enter the two numbers in the bottom right

    208.67.222.222

    208.67.220.220

either into your router ( first page usually in dns settings in router setup)

    https://www.opendns.com/start

or in your network card settings > tcip > change from dns automatic to use this dns

if you can do the router route it is easier , and will do all the comptuers

If you have problems change it back

you may have to reset the router and set it back up again

The whole operation is seamless and you should not notice a difference except in internet browsing speed increasing

    Open dns is free

instructions and diagrams on how to enter your router control panel here

  4. Can you please give us some more details? I am assuming that you are talking about hosting a web page, but there's a lot more to that then just changing your DNS server.

    Can you clarify, please? Thanks!

  5. I don't know what is your friend's intention, but as long as I aware, the DNS server address will follow your ISP

  6. hmm, restarting your router and modem, then disconnect, then reconnect, then restart your router and modem. then check, if nothing happens try again.
