Question:

Changing PCs Power Supply Unit and OEM Vista Installation?

by  |  earlier

I'm thinking of installing a new PSU in my PC as my current supply is only 300w and I want to increase to 600w so I can install new hardware.

From looking around it seems like a simple process but I wanted to make sure of this first of all and more importantly I need to know if changing the PSU will affect my OEM Vista installation. I've heard that changing the hardware can result in problems with Windows.

Thanks

  1. You will be absolutely fine windows vista oem leaves a tattoo on your hard drive, some places on your motherboard but not your PSU .I just changed my microchip from a celeron d360 to a celeron e1200 this afternoon in halve an hour and asked this very same question, but be careful make sure you disconnect power and keep pressing power button  to discharge any power as you might end up with a trip to the hospital after a loud bang and flying across the room(it has happened).

  2. jg right again no effect on os - cant understand why you need more power though, just buy splitters..

  3. when you change the motherboard it can, but the power supply won't make a difference. in other words, your computer shouldn't notice the difference between PSUs, since it'll be providing power the same way. if you plan on changing the motherboard, then reinstall windows after you do so, but otherwise it should be fine.

bottom line: your computer most likely won't notice the difference, and if anything does go wrong then just reinstall windows.

  4. Worste case you will have to phone Microsoft and request a new key, which they will give you for free.

  5. hi tony

changing your psu is like you say a pretty basic procedure and wont affect your vista os what so ever, the hard drive holds the os and as long as this isnt changed then your ok,as for changing the psu i have my own method

using a permanent marker or cd disk marker i colour code each power connector in the case, for example red for graphics power, blue for hard drives, green for optical drives and yellow for other peripherals

this ensures when changing your motherboard or cpu and you need to remove your motherboard you can assemble the pc in the same way it was previously built

ok it wont apply to a new psu however you can colour code the connectors as you fit them so if you do need to remove the new psu for any reason you know where each connector needs to go

finally when buying a new psu beware of cheap inexpensive power supplys,go for the named brands such as enermax and thermaltake, these may cost a bit more than the budget models but you get the rated power unlike the cheaper models which may advertise 600watt but in theory you will only get around 450watt max

                     any problems let me know

                                  good luck tony !

  6. You only need to purchase a new copy of Windows if you make a major change to the hardware i.e. obtaining a new motherboard.

Replacing your PSU is not considered as being a major change in hardware.

    Hope this helps :)

  7. ive never had any problems when installing new power supplys

  8. It'll be fine as long as you don't remove your current hard drive.

    All ATX PSU's are compatible.

Fan size means nothing, but one, big fan is better than two, little fans because anything smaller than 10cm usually makes a racket, and if the two fans are one on top of the other, you'll start shouting when you talk to someone in your room.

Try this PSU - its fantastic, new and cheap!

  9. No problem, remove & replace, doesn't affect Windows.
