Changing Pfaff 1222 sewing machine belt

I have a Pfaff 1222 sewing machine. the belt started to slip and the machine was clanging and freezing. I changed the outter belt as it was pretty well chewed up. However the machine is still making loud noises and is still freezing. the belt seems to be too big but it is the correct belt. Is there something special I am suppose to do when replacing this belt.
