Question:

Changing a driver's club face angle?

I have a taylor made TP superquad driver that is manufactured with a 1 degree open face. I had it reshafted and now it looks closed. It might be the new color on the shaft that makes it look "closed". Is there a way to check it or bend it out to mayber 2-3 degrees open? I love the driver but anything to help fight the hook would make things a little easier. It's the only club in my bag that I have this problem with. Will getting a stiffer shaft help at all? It's a stiff shaft already. Any advice would be appreciated

  1. To flexible of a shaft would cause the club face to open up more causeing a slice, but with to stiff of a shaft you will lose distance and gain control.  It might just just be the colors of the shaft playing with your head.  Since you have the SuperQuad move around the weights on the club head and put more weight on the heel of the club to make less of a hooking shot.

  2. Joey V,

You say you're hitting a hook with only this club? Have you given any consideration to the configuration of your quad weights? Maybe it's set up for a draw bias.....to undo that you'd want to either balance the weights equally or put the heavier weights out towards the 'toe' of the club.

The taylor website has a tutorial on weighting for the TP driver...you should have like 64 different options I believe....I looked into buying that driver at one time.

Also, as far as a stiffer shaft goes....without seeing you swing I couldn't tell....but a shaft with lower torque would be good...this is the resistance to twisting of the shaft, which sometimes help to find a draw, especially if you tend to hit a lot of toe hooks.

    Good Luck!

  3. A clubfitter can check the face angle to be sure.  But reshafting it did nothing to change the face angle.  And just because the specs say it is up to 1 degree open doesn't mean it ever was.  The tolerances can be + or - a degree either way.

Bending a driver head isn't recommended if even possible.  A hook is caused by a closed face in relation to the path of the clubhead.  Shafts with different feel like one that is very tip stiff may help slightly but it is predominately a swing issue.

One thing is a driver isn't hit grounded.  So you could slightly open the face with your grip at address.  Other than that the blame is on the indian.

  4. Changing a shaft will not change how open or closed the club face is at address.  The person who you took your driver to probably did a poor job of lining up the grip so the clubhead dosnt seem square at adress.  Change the grip or simply rotate the club in your hands when you adress the ball.  Dont use the markers on your grip to line up your hands before address.
