hey i wondered here about how going about changing to R/O water from using normal tap water i use, i change 120 litres of water per week in my tanks minimum, i have no place i can buy a R/O unit in my place which is a bit of nightmare as know it will cost lots to keep buying it from local fish shop,

My main question is what do you add to the R/O water b4 putting it in the tank and also will it be ok just to mix the two waters together and if not how is best way to transfer to this type of water???

  1. I don't know a lot about R.O but this i do know

all R.O water is is filtered water to take out more of the impurities, mainly used for discus and brackish fish.

Yes you can mix tap water and R.O.

im sorry i cant help further

  2. We slowly switched from tap to R/O water to reduce the stress to the fish. Use some tap and some R/O, slowly increasing how much R/O you use until that is all you are using.

Drs Foster & Smith is a great source for purchasing R/O nits and equipment.

  3. Are you running a marine tank?

If not, and you have a coldwater/tropical tank you don't need to use RO water, it is actually detrimental to the fish and you have to add minerals back into it...

  4. RO water is just basically water with nothing in at all. When adding it to the tank, you can just turn on the RO unit and put the pipe from the unit into the tank as all impurities have been removed so there is no chlorine or chloramines which tap water does have. You can mix the 2 waters together, you will just be adding weaker tap water as adding both types of water means that you are adding less tap. How do you mean transfer? If you're talking about from the shop, when i get my RO, i just take 2 25l containers (the types you get in camping stores) and they get filled up and taken home with me. If you're going to get an RO unit, its best to get a 4 stage unit but they are quite large, you can however attach them to the outside of your house and use them as needed.

hope that helps, though it may be a bit garbled... :)
