Question:

Changing gas fireplace logs with ceramic rocks?

i'm looking to buy a gas fireplace. i like the look of the 'contemporary rocks' ie: not logs. however, it is quite pricey. is it possible to buy a regular gas fireplace and 'switch out' the logs for something of a more contemporary look (assume that the product meets safety standards)? a dealer told me that the logset is specific to the fireplace and cannot be changed. i'm curious if that is a 'typical' answer which prevents people from doing 'odd' things like putting in regular stone instead of a fireproof ceramic. thanks.

  1. That's actually the correct answer to keep people from doing things that might be dangerous. If you alter a fireplace in any way that goes against the manufacturer, not only do you void the warranty, but there's the possibility that it will affect the gas flow in the unit and cause an explosion. Unlikely, sure, but not impossible. Gas is one thing that should not be experimented with.

The good news is that all sorts of companies are coming out with the contemporary fireplaces. This has been a huge year for the "stone" look vs. regular logs.

I can give you some ideas if I know better what you're looking for. Direct vents are more expensive, but quite efficient. Or if the heat doesn't matter you could use an inexpensive woodburning box and add a set of vented gas logs. On that type of burner the logs and stones are usually interchangeable. Let me know if you need more help!

  2. u have to change the burner and then the logs....if the fire box is 34" or larger u should have no problem..
