Changing name/ last names?

Question

Hi. Is it possible for me to change my last name that are all in my records to something else? If so, how do I do it? And what are the requirements for it?

I also wanted to change the spelling of my first name, but currently I am way more concerned about the last name.

(By the way, I don't know if this is the right category for my question)

It is possible for you to legally change your name.  You need to check at your local courthouse on how to do this.  Once this is approved, then you have to have any records changed that you want changed.  Some records, such as high school transcripts, will not be changed, though they may have a note that a name change has occured.

BTW, if you are changing your name to hide past police records or current criminal acts, you will probably not be approved.

In my area of the woods you have to make any name changes through the court, and it usually costs money, I think you can spell it however you want as long as the correct paperwork is there and you attach the check. Call you nearest District court and speak to someone at the county clerks office.

No, this is really not the right category.  This is the genealogy forum.  You changing your name is a legal issue, not genealogy.  Plus, the laws regarding name changes vary by state.  You need to contact your local courts for requirements and fees.

You can change your name by finding an attorney and paying the fee ($150-300)....if you are 18+ you can do this all by yourself...under 18 you need your parent's to sign documents.  They will file the proper papers, get your social security card changed, issue a revised birth certificate and post a notice in the local paper announcing the change.  Afterwards, you will take those new documents to change your own driver's license, checking/savings account, credit cards and anything else you currently have.  First step...see an attorney.
