  1. Once you have flown the outbound portion of your flight American will let you change the return flight (with 3 days notice) for a $150 change fee and with no further cost such as an increase in fare.  I believe the $150 is their new change fee up from $100.  Everything is getting more expensive because of oil!  Have fun on your trip.

  2. There is a good possibility that they won't let you change the ticket at all.  So call them immediately.  The more in advance of your flight the more likely that they will cut you some slack!  There is no way for us to give you a real solid answer on this because every ticket is a little different.  Depending on the price and when the ticket was issued.  Call right now!

  3. Different tickets have different rules. Sometimes the change penalty is $100, sometimes it's so large you might as well throw the ticket away and start over.

The easiest way to find out is to call AA and ask.  Asking is free, you only have to pay if you actually change it.

  4. Non-refundable tickets can be changed for, I believe, $100. Call AA and ask. Sometimes, depending on how much the ticket costs, they won't even let you change it.
