Changing stitches

Hi guys

No manual with this machine of my sisters - I just wan to know if there is a trick to changing from a straight stitch to a zigzag - when I move the nob to switch, it still sews straight - width and length have been adjusted appropriately - please advise?

It is a Janome Mystyle 16 model 652 - no option below
